Number three in the random and sporadic series of favourite 80:8 song lyrics is ‘Sometime Around Midnight’ by the Airborne Toxic Event. The lyrics are actually quite simple, but they do that clever thing where they speak much more eloquently about a situation than most of us could ever manage. And in this case, most of us would be sobbing into a pint rather than channeling our pain into a three minute pop song of startlingly cathartic properties. It’s sung with intensity also. You know the singer has been there. Has been in that bar. Has seen her leave. With somebody else. So, before I impale myself on the nostalgic fangs of self-immolation (pardon?) here we go:
And so there’s a change, in your emotions.
And all these memories come rushing
like feral waves to your mind.
Of the curl of your bodies,
like two perfect circles entwined.
And you feel hopeless and homeless
and lost in the haze of the wine.
